SHOP THE POST

I have thought about Father’s Day gifts for Tom over the last few weeks and he is so hard to shop for. He doesn’t like the regular “dad” type things that you always see in “Gifts for Dad” round ups in stores. He’s more in to stuff like this (which he sent me a link to last week so I think he was dropping hints), and it is so hideous but he likes to collect weird shit. I always have to make of note when he points something out or sends me links to things because most of the stuff he likes can’t be found at any regular retailer so I have to either hunt it down or make sure that I order it well enough ahead of time so that it arrives on time.  Do you have a hard to shop for significant other?

Weekly Reads (and maybe videos):

This week the top thing on my mind is mental health. Early this week we lost Kate Spade, and today I woke up to the loss of Anthony Bourdain.  The CDC shows a huge increase in suicides and yet it is still something we as a society stigmatize and don’t invest enough money in to. I hope that with enough people talking about it and mass sharing the crisis helpline numbers that we can help to stop this epidemic.  In the US call 1-800-273-TALK and for those outside of the US here is a list of crisis and suicide prevention lines around the world. You do matter. People do care. There are always people to talk to and to listen.

The Addams Family is going animated and we are beyond excited.

A guy hearing Rage Against the Machine for the first time. I love Rage, they are one of my favourites to angry exercise to. This video reminds of the story Tom told me of when he and his friends went to a cottage last summer for the weekend and he put the Smashing Pumpkins Siamese Dream album on and one of his much younger friends completely lost it because he thought it was so incredible. He didn’t know who they were and thought it was a new album, and he immediately bought it from iTunes. Every music library needs Siamese Dream. Don’t you agree?

“If I am an advocate for anything, it is to move. As far as you can, as much as you can. Across the ocean, or simply across the river. Walk in someone else’s shoes or at least eat their food. It’s a plus for everybody.” – Anthony Bourdain

  1. Hi Sara,

Thank you for so thoughtfully addressing mental health and the recent tragic losses of Kate Spade and Anthony Bourdain. Suicide effects all of us and has a way of recalibrating what is central. What is most important and human. That we need to reach out to others, we need to check in, we need to share and have an open dialogue about mental illness.

    • Mental health hits close to home for me. I think it is something that hits close to home for almost everyone but because it is so stigmatized many people aren’t even aware that they know or love someone who is fighting it. When I had ppd you would never have known unless I told you, but I didn’t tell anyone. Not even my husband.
