At any given time of the year New York has an infinite amount of things to see and do. In this post I am going to focus on some of the things you may only catch around Christmas time. Many are available year round, but there is something about this season that makes this experience a little more special. New York at Christmas is a sight to behold and there are so many seasonal activities that both individuals and families can enjoy together. The Christmas spirit is alive and well in the city and it supposedly the inspiration for the Christmas poem “Twas the Night Before Christmas” (actually called A Visit from St. Nicholas).
Aside from many things to do there are also many things to buy. Souvenir vendors are all over the place so you should have no issues finding a souvenir even if it is the last minute. I went through and picked a few New York City inspired souvenirs that are slightly different from the traditional I ♥ New York t-shirts (see above).
It really is always hard to pick and narrow down the What to See list because there is so many things that I want to see, so I decided to stick with a very family orientated list. If you are planning on travelling to New York City this holiday I hope you have a great time.
- Rockafeller Center Plaza Christmas Tree – Put up every year since 1933 this New York tradition shouldn’t be missed.
- Macy’s Santaland – Your kids are definitely not going to want t miss the 13,000 sq ft North Pole village.
- 5th Avenue Window shopping – here you will see some of the best Christmas windows in the world.
- Bryant Park Winter Village – An open air market that includes more than 125 boutique style shops where you can find unique gifts and treats from November – January. There is also a skating rink that is free if you bring your own skates.
- Chelsea Market – A food hall and shopping mall, this market has everything you could want, especially if you are a foodie.
- Lincoln Center – Nothing says Christmas like going to see the Nutcracker ballet performed on stage.
- Serenditpity 3 – Famous from being in movies this restaurant is home to the most expensive dessert and the famous Frrrozen Hot Chocolate. Stop in for a decadent treat. (kind of makes me want to watch the movie Serendipity again)
- Russian Tea Room – Open in the 1920’s and catering to high society it closed in 2002. It was reopened in 2006 and kept the same decor it did on the day it closed. Seems like a cliché place to go but I love tea and all the treats that go with it. They also offer a Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Years menu. Madonna worked there as a coat check girl in 1982 so you kind of got to go 😉
- Botanical gardens Holiday Train Show – Model trains going through 150 landmarks, each on being created from natural resources such as bark and leaves. The kids will love it, and so will the adults. It is recommended to make a reservation.
Aside from the above as per my history obsession I would also want to hit the museums and art galleries. New York is full of them, and they are world renowned.
