I got sucked into an internet hole on the theory of Edgar Allan Poe potentially having a time machine. It’s fascinating stuff and because I would love to use a time machine, I really want to believe that he did actually have one. A funny thing when I get lost in these internet holes (usually a Wikipedia hole) is that no matter what I start looking at, for some reason or another I end up at the page for a monarch in British history. It’s so bizarre. I started with Edgar Allan Poe and ended up at Edward the Black Prince this time. I can’t even pinpoint where my path changed. It’s fun though, and I do it often.

This first week in April was typically Canadian. Friday I had to break out the winter coats again, while today I am wearing a summer dress. And this is one of the reasons that strictly seasonal capsules don’t work for me. Things just change too fast, and too often to keep only one season in my closet at a time. I remember eons ago in college there was a ridiculously hot day in April (30+°C) and it brought everyone out that night in hordes. I was wearing a long, sarong type skirt, with a tank top, my trusty jean jacket (which I still have), and some platform sandals (early 2000’s fashion). All the patios at the clubs were open and flooded with people so we went to a strictly indoor dance club. When we left at 2am it was snowing. I had to walk home in a summer outfit in a blizzard and it was brutal. It was only about 2 miles but it sucked bad even though I was loaded at the time which I am sure helped to keep me warmer. I learned to pay attention to the weather carefully after that.

I almost forgot that Easter was coming up. Am I the only one that doesn’t really like it and wish that we never really turned it into a celebrated holiday with the kids? (Aside from those that celebrate for religious purposes. It obviously has a completely different meaning than the Easter bunny does). I had to go out and do a quick easter run on Saturday while Tom was home so I don’t have to worry about it last minute. And since there is generally at least one kid with me 24/7 it makes it hard to be a super sneaky present buyer. Next thing you know, it’s going to be time to start buying Christmas presents again :/

Hope you all have a great (and productive) week!

Nothing motivates you to clean quite like your husband saying at noon while you are still in your pyjamas, that people might be coming over that night.  I also think he would have neglected to tell me at all if I hadn’t mentioned that I had a dream that night that he had a party, and someone stole my shoes*, so Kurt Cobain helped me try to find out who stole them. Tom was like, “oh yeah, that reminds me. Some people may be coming over tonight.” Needless to say I began to rush round and multitask at that point. I had plans on colouring my hair this day so while it was in, I cleaned the bathroom. Then I folded the massive pile of laundry that I have ignored for weeks while Roo cleaned out her closets so we could actually get in a put the clothes away. Tom made a run to Value Village to bring down our donations of two large, clear garbage bags full of clothes and shoes, one rubbermaid container filled with games and puzzles, and the old easel. At least that clears out the front doorway (minus the old coffee table that needs to vamoose).

I still have some more closet purging to do but that is enough for the day. After I go through everything in there I plan to update the “What I am Currently Wearing” post because things have changed a bit in the last few months. I’ve had to replace a few worn things, some wardrobe holes have been filled (hello boyfriend jeans), and some new ones are discovered (I am looking for a trench coat). I still have all my trusty favourites though like my Moto jacket, Fryes, band tees (I get them from here, and here, and thrift stores), and sneakers. I have meant to do an update forever and keep forgetting. You need to remind me to do these things ;)

*This totally happened to me before and apparently angered me enough that I am still dreaming about it 15 years later ;) Way back in college when I lived with roommates, the weekend I went home to have my wisdom teeth removed my roommates had a get together. It wasn’t even a party according to my then best friend whom I also lived with. When I came back that Monday my brand new pair of shoes that I hadn’t even worn once were gone. My friend thinks she knows who took them but there was no way to prove it. I was pissed. And I am a total grudge holder so I am still pissed.

Do you have anything you are still angry about that happened years ago?

Spring is Here with the Daniel Wellington Classic Petite

Spring is here, but you wouldn’t have guessed it by the snow that was blowing outside my window last night. Spring to me is a time when I go through my house and wardrobe looking for ways to freshen and brighten it after the long winter. This means some new, bright pillows, some colour and patterns added into my relatively neutral wardrobe, breaking out any shoes that don’t need socks, a few colourful scarves, and a new accessory or two. While I don’t usually wear a lot of accessories, I love to wear a watch and you will 9 times out of 10 see me wearing on any day of the week.

In the middle of March Daniel Wellington released their Classic Petite watch in four colour combinations: The Melrose which has a rose gold mesh strap and comes with a black or white face, and The Sterling which has a silver mesh strap with either a black or white face. Both are lovely and timeless, and easily transition from day to night wear.

I am wearing the Classic Petite Melrose in rose gold/black. I love this colour because it adds a subtle blush, warm, spring tone which softens up the black and grey clothes that I tend to gravitate towards. I also love that it is so easy to adjust. I have small wrists and often I have to get and extra hole punched in to my leather straps, but with this mesh one it easily slides up and down to fit for your comfort and fit preferences. I’m really happy to be able to freshen up my wardrobe for spring with this beauty.

Until April 30th you can get 15% off your Daniel Wellington purchase at danielwellington.com with the code LIVELOVESARA15.

As I am writing this it is Saturday night and it’s about as quiet as it has been for the last week. Tom is at a music gig, Merle is building Lego while watching Youtube tutorials and Roo is trying to get her room clean (I know, I know, it has been a ridiculously long time she has worked on it but I refuse to cave and do it for her this time) in order for her to earn back her tv cord so she can play video games. She also always bitches that the cat doesn’t sleep with her and I told her that if she didn’t have so much shit all over the place he probably would. Tonight I proved my point after she stripped the bed and tidied it all up he was sleeping happily at the foot of it. Maybe this will be enough to motivate her.

It’s so horrendously disorganized in here as well, so much so that I want to start buying decorating magazines again to find some inspiration. Maybe just some small-space pins on Pinterest will work too though. That’s what I used to do when I was a kid. I used my allowance to buy decorating magazines and would find an inspiration and try to mimic it in my bedroom. I feel like I am constantly complaining about organizing and too much crap, but seriously the floor plan of this place is so wacky that you can’t do much. We need an organizational unit that will incorporate the tv, gaming systems, and have maximum area to display collection and miscellaneous crap that seems to have no home. Every tv wall unit that I see is too big for the space or won’t work because of the limited areas we have to put it because our only long, straight, continuous wall is windows with about a foot of wall in between each one. I am starting to think one of my best options is to get two Ikea Kallax shelves, and run one lengthwise and stack the other on top so it’s shaped like and L. I would use the top portion of the lengthwise shelf to put the tv on and all the rest would be super awesome storage spots. The only fail I can think with this idea is that when the one is stacked on top it may be too tall because the ceiling hangs low on that wall in front to of the window because of the heating duct. Bah. This is getting ridiculous. Remind me not to get a corner unit again. It might work to run the 8 shelf lengthwise and then put a tall 4 shelf on the end but it might jut out in to the front of the window. I would have to do some serious measuring. The Brimnes might work though so I’ll have to remember that one because I’ve never seen it before.

I promised Merle though that I would get her one of those Kallax shelves in yellow and get rid of the dresser that isn’t being used as a dresser. I’m going to try to attempt to finally get one this week if Tom has a later start to the day one day (we are a one vehicle household and he takes it to work). Can you think of any inexpensive wall unit that I can configure to fit into really small and awkward areas?

I am also trying to master the art of folding a fitted sheet tonight and failing miserably. Every time I see one of the videos making it’s rounds, they make it look so easy that I try again but it never seems to work for me. I will admit that they do look neater than usual even if they aren’t done quite like he showed me (I love Clinton Kelly) :)

12 Mules for the Budget Conscious Shopper

Mules for the budget conscious

Topshop Alexa | 9. Nordstrom Pink Mule | 10. Asos Masie Wide Fit | 11. Aldo Shahan | 12. Steve Madden Kandi Embroidered |

I mentioned in one of my my last posts how I ordered some spring/summer shoes and they sent the wrong ones. I was pretty bummed but we have a retailer that is quite close so I was able to go in and exchange for the correct pair. I’m not going to blame them because the style name on the box were nearly identical as the correct shoes, and the only difference  between the shoes is the detailing. I wanted the Kandi with the buckle and they sent the Kandi-P with a line of pearls. The only issues that I met while getting the correct ones (and this is something that I have noticed in a lot of retailers now so this complaint is not directed specifically to them) is that when you exchange a product that is not identical to the one you bought (like a same style, different size situation) and you ordered the product online they refund you the purchase and then make you make re-purchase the correct item. This is instead of doing a direct exchange and paying or refunding the difference like they did when I worked retail (maybe that’s old school?).

In the grand scheme of things that wasn’t a big deal. I was able to buy the shoes after the refund but that would not have been the case several years ago. You see, I paid by Paypal when I ordered them online which means when they refunded the purchase the money did not go back into my account right away. In fact as I write this it still hasn’t gone through and isn’t due to be processed until this week sometime (which will be a week after I exchanged them). Then I have to transfer it from my Paypal to my bank account. The whole process will take anywhere from 1-2 weeks. If I didn’t have the money in my account to pay for the new ones I wouldn’t have been able to get the correct shoe for several weeks  even though the mistake was made by them. It seems unfair to those that may have had to save to make their purchase and don’t have disposable income to cover the costs of another pair until their money is refunded. Does that seem like a legitimate complaint to you? I wish they would review this new process because I can see it causing some real issues and even embarrassment for customers that can’t afford it and that is obviously not something you ever want your customers to feel.

Back to the new shoes now. I was looking for a decent pair of Gucci dupes. We all know which ones I am talking about, they slip-one mule style that we are seeing everywhere atm. They come in fur, non-fur, or embroidered option. There is no way in hell that I could afford to drop $800-$1200 (depending on the style) on a pair of shoes. Technically I could pull it off if I didn’t enroll the kids in activities, skipped paying the hydro, and meal planned around cereal for a month but that’s not really affording it is it? Affording them would be able to make the purchase without even having to think about it because the amount is too small to be an issue. So dupes it is for me and I’m pretty satisfied with these. The sizing is perfect, the leather is soft, and they look cute on. They will work well once all the snow and slush is gone.

My rant about affording expensive shoes isn’t saying that I don’t want them nor would never buy them. While I do want a pair of Gucci classic loafers and hope to save for a pair sometime in the future, I would not spend that much money on a pair of shoes that are the newest trend because that money could be put to better use in my life (if that makes sense). Now if I won the lottery it might be a different story ;)

Above I compiled a collection of slip-ons if you are in the market for a cheaper version.

Would you buy a pair of dupes or would you rather save for the real thing?
