I see this question repeated a lot in the captions of friends/people I follow on Instagram, “If you could move anywhere in the world right now where would it be?” It’s always gets the conversations going in the comments and it’s so interesting to see where everyone chooses and their reasonings behind it. My answer is always the same and generally is in this order Edinburgh, London, Dublin, and an honourable mention goes to Copenhagen.

I have always had a major draw to the UK. History is my thing, but primarily medieval history. The tv shows I watch, and even the books I read are more often than not set in this region (and many times in a historical time period). I’ve always wondered what the draw was and finding out that I am genetically tied to the area with over 70% of my DNA coming from the UK and Ireland it kind of makes sense to me. It probably sounds so cheesy but I sometimes feel like it’s my ancestors telling me to go “home”. So that is my reasons for my choices (and the Scottish accent is my absolute most favourite accent ever) and I hope one day to be able to fulfill the dream.

I had an email request from a woman who is spending a semester (3 months) in Scotland. When I wrote back asking if she was still interested in me putting some ideas together she has not yet responded (she might actually already be gone). But I thought I would do something for the destination anyway. It’s not a 3 month list but I can get over month of outfits from these pieces. With that in mind it would be easy to add a few extra pieces here and there to make sure that you would be suitably attired for the 3 months.

I’m basing my choices on the Instagram conversation of where would you go, but I am adding the part of what would you pack if you were leaving now to move there? Edinburgh doesn’t get even remotely as cold as it does here in the winter so worrying about a heavy parka and heavy-duty snow boots wouldn’t be an issue. This is my “go to my closet and toss stuff into the bag picks” that would be very similar to pieces I own that I would want to bring with me.

Thirty outfit options from these pieces are in this post.

So if you could move anywhere in the world right this second, where would you choose?

I figured it out guys. I managed to get two twin beds into the girls’ room. We used every small area or weird shaped wall to its best ability and believe it or not there actually seems to be more room than before. We were finally able to find an Ikea Minnen extendable bed on kijiji and the guy ended up selling it to us for only $20 which is an awesome deal. Now this week I am planning on working on Merle’s duvet, and Roo decided that she needed a new duvet too but Star Wars, so I ordered her a Star Wars Pottery Barn twin flat sheet off of eBay to make in to a duvet as well. I was going to order her the actual duvet from Pottery Barn but with shipping and fees it was going to cost me $160 (sometimes it is so expensive to get things shipped from the U.S. to Canada) and I was not paying that much for a kids duvet (or any duvet actually). The sheet cost me under $30 after shipping.

Zara has some really gorgeous pieces for fall in their Nomad line. I kind of want everything because I have two gift cards that are bringing a hole in my pocket from my birthday. I ended up buying this cardigan (In sand) and this kimono sweater (in black)  to start but I want to sit back and wait to see what else is coming in.

On the weekend I subscribed to The Great Courses Plus and while the reason I originally got it was for Roo’s school. I also got it because I thoroughly enjoy the videos (especially the history ones). I am currently watching a 24 part lecture called The Black Death: The World Most Devastating Plague and it is fascinating.

I’m using the last two weeks of summer to really try to clean and organize the house. I feel like I completely missed the boat on this earlier in summer and I am trying to scramble around and get things done last-minute. Comicon is coming up on labour day weekend so we finish the summer with our favourite thing to do, and Tom is super excited because his idol Bruce Campbell is going to be there this year.

Are you cramming in a last-minute projects or fun this summer?

I finally made some progress this weekend with my genealogy on my maternal side. I found a lot of information about my maternal grandfather a while ago, but my maternal grandmother seemed to be elusive. After searching every possible name, name combination, and spelling (these things can really affect what results you get) I found documentation for her baptismal certificate on ancestry and it kind of escalated from there. Building her side of the tree really showed me where my Irish heritage came from. It’s cool to see the breakdown of your ethnicity after you get your AncestryDNA test results but it’s even cooler to be able to trace back and pinpoint exactly where in your tree every part comes from. My Nana definitely was Irish though I never even realized.

Tom was out of town on Saturday night and what I thought would be a nice peaceful night of everyone going to bed early, and me being able to read for hours undisturbed turned into two kids dragging their shit in to the room and taking advantage of the empty bed. I swear to god these two even fight in their sleep. One snuggles too close and the other hauls out and hits her in her sleep. Peaceful? No.

The kijiji deal for twin Ikea beds fell through so in the meantime we flipped their Ikea Kura to the non bunk setup for Roo and the other bed is just a mattress on the floor until we get the adjustable bed for Merle. We can adjust the bed to the 2nd size so it will take up less room which is needed at the moment. I also told Roo that if she watches some tutorials and learns how to do it, she can decoupage her desk with old comics if she wants. I’m hoping to have the room all put back together before September. That may be wishful thinking though.

I’m sitting on two Zara gift cards that I got for my birthday. I can’t wait until of their fall stock completely comes in. Have you spotted any fall pieces you love yet?

Yesterday was my birthday and I turned to big 3-8. I’m not too sure how I feel about that. Nothing that I thought I would accomplish in the last year came to pass and I feel like it is a cop-out saying that I will do them this year. I should probably just cut myself some slack, but I am not very good at that. Maybe that should be something that I work on this year too ;)

For my birthday Tom and the girls gave me a whole bunch of band tees, the Nirvana Nevermind vinyl, and Zara gift cards. They know me so well ;) He said that he thought I would be disappointed with gift cards because it was a last-minute gift (his original idea didn’t pan out) but I have 9 million things in my virtual basket now and the gift is perfect.

I had a dream a while back that I had to make amends with someone who we had a falling out with a while back. Someone I promised myself I would never talk to again and I woke up feeling icky. I just found out that Tom has to talk to this person in regards to a business thing and it will mean that I have to at a minimum be socially polite to this person if I am ever in their company. It’s kind of like I had this weird premonition……I also recently had a dream that I moved to the UK; maybe that one will come true too ;)

I finally received the sheet that I needed to start making Merle’s duvet. I haven’t used my sewing machine in forever; it’s been sitting inside my closet on the floor with stuff piled on it. I am hoping to high hell that it hasn’t caused any of the settings to be messed up because I really suck at fixing it. I probably should have taken a basic sewing course at some point in my life because I am self-taught and kind of wing it. Side note: they offer a beginners sewing course for Roo’s age around here and I am starting to think it would be a good skill for her to have. It would be better for a professional to show her how to do it than me if she ever wants to attempt to make something.

Anyone have a laundry basket in their house that hasn’t been folded and put away for an extremely long time? I have one that has sat there so long (I am embarrassed to say how long) that I really need to bite the bullet. I think I need to purge the girl’s closet first though. Man, the summer is over half over and I have accomplished nothing. Bah.

Are you getting everything done that you thought you would this summer?

We went to Toronto Gem Expo this past weekend and I was pretty cool. Since Tom used to be a goldsmith and Merle loves geodes and gemstones I figured it would be fun family thing to do (plus it only cost $8 to get in). There were so many great pieces there but there was this one woman (her business is Calle I.D. Jewelry and Designs) who had the coolest, most unique, and beautiful items there. I would classify her stuff as steam punk meets fantasy  and there was couple of pieces that I would have loved to buy but didn’t know how I would ever wear them. One was a beautiful Phoenix necklace, and the other was a dragon collar. We ended up buying the girls a couple of eye rings, but man those necklaces would have been statement pieces. Also I am obsessed with amber that have insects trapped in them. I kept gravitating to them and would love a huge piece like that to display at home.

My birthday is next weekend and I bought myself a trench coat. I have wanted one for a while and saw that Zara had a few just coming in for fall. I was going to just order one online but decided it was worth my time to try it on. I’m glad I did because I ended up getting the x-small instead of my regular small. While I like an oversized trench, I decided to go down in size because the small looked a little too oversized (would have looked better if I was taller) and bunched in the back when I belted it. I’m kind of really excited to wear this now so bring on rain and cooler weather.

July is almost officially over and I have completed about 50% of my Christmas shopping. Maybe more like 40% but definitely a good amount is checked off. Tom was working downtown last week and he noticed a Doc Marten outlet store so he went in. They were clearing out a ton of styles and he was able to pick himself up a really awesome pair that looks like a painting, and a Union Jack pair for Roo which I am squirrelling away for Christmas. She is going to be super excited because she was bummed when she grew out of her last pair. She actually has them on display on one of her bookshelves.

I don’t know if you remember me saying that I was planning on getting a subscription to the Great Courses Plus and use that for part of homeschooling this year. They just sent me an email letting me know about new courses added and one of them is French. I’m so excited but his because it means that I don’t have to pay $200 now to sign Roo up for a French course. I can use this for the first half of the year and then she can take the course for the second “semester”. I wasn’t really feeling like spending that much at this time since I have to buy Level 2 for Merles Reading/Phonics books which will probably set me back $200 as well. I’m just thankful hat I was proactive years ago and bought as many pieces of curriculum in pdf form as I could so now I can use them for Merle without added expenses. I am also thankful that there is a library right across the street (like literally across the street) that we can run over to and grab any supplemental material we may need without much worry. I’ve really got to kick my butt into high gear and get these last-minute things put together. I am usually much more prepared than this.

Does anyone else feel like the summer is totally escaping from them? Also, Tom got us Popeye’s Chicken for dinner and I think my entire week of fairly healthy eating just went up in flames :(
