I thought that I would start the winter capsule wardrobe season with how to build a winter capsule wardrobe on a budget. Yes winter, we are already halfway through fall which floors me.

The good thing about switching over from fall to winter capsule wardrobes, or even from a winter to spring capsule wardrobe is that the changes are relatively minimal.

There isn’t a huge drastic shift in the weather here between those three seasons since both fall and spring are quite short weatherwise.

Winter is long here.

Fall changes to winter weather quickly and winter often stretches far into spring.

Then spring feels about 2 minutes long before the summer heat and humidity blasts us.

So like I said, going from fall to winter wardrobes usually only involves some minor changes, and the addition of winter boots, coats, and accessories.

This means you shouldn’t have to buy a lot of new things…unless of course, you need to replace items or are in the market for new coats and/or boots.

Winter gear is EXPENSIVE and it’s not something you can really go without once the temperatures drop.

It is why homeless shelters and women’s shelters are always looking for coats, boots, and warm winter accessories. So if it is time for an upgrade in your winter gear this year, please consider donating your older items.

They are needed.

This is also the time of year where people really start to worry about finances. And after the last 9 months, you can take the regular seasonal worries and magnify them.

Then there is the uncertainty of everything else and it is a very financially stressful time (and otherwise).

I am making the girls go through all of their clothes and toys so we can donate them.

I know a lot of parents are going to be relying on thrift stores for Christmas gifts and it would be nice to make sure the shelves are lined with as many good toys as possible.

Since winter gear is so expensive it if you are on a really tight budget or want to dip into the ethical shopping side of capsules wardrobes then you can look second hand.

I have seen A LOT of Sorel winter boots in the thrift stores over the last few weeks.

Many different styles and conditions but honestly, all pretty workable. Most of the winter styles have removable liners that you can wash.

But if the thought of wearing second hand footwear grosses you out then you can just replace the liners.

New liners usually cost between $25 and $40, so if you factor in that cost you can still get a pair of $200 winter boots for $25-$50 with new liners.

That’s not bad when you factor in cost per wear.

What is a Capsule Wardrobe?

In a nutshell it is a small collection of clothing items that all work together.

It should focus on quality (more on that below), versatility, and your personality.

Personality is a big one for me because if you base your wardrobe on trying to be someone else, it won’t work. Choose pieces that you like.

On to capsule wardrobe budget…

Like I mention in all of my budget capsule wardrobe posts, budgets vary so don’t compare yourself to others.

Your idea of a budget is not going to be the same as someone else’s, so go with what works best for you.

My main suggestion is to use your money wisely and buy the best quality pieces you can for your budget.

This will benefit you in the long run because the goal is to make things last so they won’t have to be replaced every year.

That is a waste of money, and so harmful to the environment.

Affordable quality items can be found during many annual sales, at thrift stores, vintage shops, eBay, and Poshmark.

The ultimate goal of having a capsule wardrobe is to fill your wardrobe with the clothes that you love and that you will look forward to wearing year after year.

Do that and you will never have to worry about what you are going to wear.

*Note: I like to wear a men’s button ups. They give a nice relaxed fit that I enjoy. Also note that some of these pieces are on sale at the time of this post.

  1. Hi Sara, I love to see Canadian companies get some love and wonder if you would put together a winter wardrobe post of all Canadian manufacturers? Thank you!
