I know, I know. Putting out a work capsule wardrobe at this time might seem weird when most people aren’t working, or are working from home.

That being said,  I made a goal that I would put one out each season which is what I will do.

There is no guarantee but many of us may, in fact, might be back into some kind of work normalcy by the summer anyway.

I believe a part of the new normal will allow some people to continue to work from home with only having to go into the office on occasion.

But I also believe that a lot of businesses will expect people to return to a workplace since many people find themselves more productive in an office or out of the home setting.

This summer work capsule wardrobe is part hopeful and part inspirational.

In general, I am usually a dark neutral sort of person as per last week’s How to Build an Edgy Capsule wardrobe for summer which is mostly based on the style of clothes that I gravitate towards.

This week I am feeling a little more colourful. Not full-blown colour but some pink, red and light purple to add a little summer inspiration to the work wardrobe.

After being trapped indoors for this length of time I feel like a little colour goes a long way in lifting my mood.

A good wardrobe should lift your mood.

I also included plenty of neutrals for those days when nothing will make you feel as good as a great head to toe black outfit.

How to Build a Work Capsule Wardrobe

Just like when you are building any capsule wardrobe you always start with taking inventory of what you already own and shopping your own closet.

A lot of people think that you need to build a capsule wardrobe from scratch, investing a ton of money for your dream wardrobe but this isn’t the case.

Step number one is to always look to see what you have first because you never know what is in there.

Base your capsule around your favourite feel-good pieces that will work for whatever type of job that you have.

Only add in pieces as needed to fill wardrobe wants and holes.

I don’t think anyone has a wardrobe that they would consider complete.

You will always have a piece or two coming in, and at least a couple of pieces leaving during most seasons/years.

This is a reflection of the natural ebb and flow of your tastes, style, and lifestyle changes and should be expected.

I know some people who are really into being accountable for their purchases and seasonal capsule wardrobes that make a list of everything they have so they can refer to it while shopping.

This lets them see if they already own something that is close to what they are considering purchasing.

Honestly, how many of us have purchased something only to bring it home and see that we already have a similar item? Having this list helps to cut down the wasteful spending habits.

Some even take this one step further and list their wardrobe in a checklist format so that they can check a box beside each piece as they wear them.

At the end of each season, they review their lists to see what they wore and didn’t wear which can help to purge unused items.

I don’t do this but it could be a helpful way to guide you if you are at the beginning of a capsule wardrobe journey to see what is working and not working for you.

Back to shopping your closet.

A work capsule wardrobe doesn’t have to be completely separate from your regular after-work or weekend capsule wardrobe.

Pieces should be able to integrate and travel in between the two easily. Most of us have at least one blazer already, some blouses, t-shirts, dress shoes.

Pull those out and set aside everything that you can use for work.

Once you have shopped your own closet, you can start to make a list of the pieces that you want your work wardrobe to contain.

You won’t need 5 pairs of black pants, one or two will suffice mixed with a couple of pairs in different cuts and colours. Mix and match these with a few tops, and a blazer or two and you have a good base.

Add a dress, and skirt to the mix since it is summer and there will be enough options to have weeks worth of different outfits.

I included 30 summer work outfits below that go with the capsule wardrobe.

Most workplaces are air-conditioned now so dresses with long sleeves and skirts in heavier fabrics will be fine.

While linen is nice and comfortable in hot weather, it also has the tendency to always be wrinkled which may come across as sloppy. Save it for your weekend wardrobe.

Remember: Never underestimate the power of shoes and accessories. These can be used to change or add to the look of an outfit ranging from subtle to maximum impact.

  1. i love the outfits you’ve put together for this capsule. i feel it really helps show how much mileage you can get out of each piece. i’m cold no matter what, so i would definitely be adding a sweater blazer or a cozy cardigan to throw on top. i agree with your comment about linen; as much as i love the look of linen dresses and trousers, it’s just not agreeable if you’re sitting down most of the day and how much it wrinkles.

our director isn’t even telling us when we’re expected to be allowed back at work, nor are they opening up discussions about the possibility of working from home once restrictions are lifted. in the meantime, we’re all just doing the best we can working from home.

    • I’m an always cold person too. I even sleep with socks on in the summer 😂

My husband hasn’t heard anything about work either. The show he was supposed to work on next got cancelled due to this. Another show has an unknown starting date. It’s frustrating. It would be nice to get even an approximation. His boss said he personally thinks it will be the end of June but no guarantees.

We are just kind of floating through each day trying to keep our sanity. I’m not going to lie, it’s definitely increased the fighting in here 😞 I can already see this causing a lot of relationship issues among people I know. It’s crazy.

  2. ugh, that is frustrating. when we pushed for any sort of approximation, we were told at least 4-6 more weeks. to me, it was a kick in the balls being told that even when we are given the green light to go back to work, it won’t be “business as usual” and we can pretty much kiss any semblance of “normal” goodbye.

i agree, this is definitely testing a lot of relationships. it’s been a good exercise in communication and patience for myself! my husband and i agree that our cat helps lighten the mood and takes the edge off of the daily stressors.
