Sometimes I am a little slow and miss the obvious even when it’s something that is asked of me repeatedly.

I get a lot of messages when people are coming to visit Toronto asking what the weather is like and what they should pack for different points of the year.

Never once has it occurred to me to make a What to Pack for Toronto packing list.

I’ll make it simple.

From May until late September/early October you can always assume that you will experience “traditional summer and autumn weather so basic packing lists are required.

The summer months will be mostly dry with high humidity and often high heat, while the late summer/early fall will have slightly more rain and temperatures in the mid-high teens (celsius).

Of course, there are anomalies and weather patterns change so there could be an occasional colder than normal summer day and a much, MUCH hotter October day like we are experiencing at the moment.

A small heat wave rolled in and it’s back to summer temperatures with mid 30’s heat index.

It’s gross, and this past week is when our condo switched over from air conditioning to the heat so it’s really, really hot in here.

That is why you need to watch the weather channel very carefully before a vacation, because no one was expecting this heat and if you came here thinking you were going to be experiencing fall then you would be sadly and uncomfortably disappointed.

Winter is another matter altogether.

Two must-haves are a warm coat, and winter footwear.

While the city keeps the roads and sidewalks really cleared of snow, it’s not instantaneous. So if you happen to be caught out in the snow or sleet you want to have shoes that are warm, waterproof, and have a tread so you don’t fall on your ass.

As for coats, December isn’t usually freezing so you could easily wear the coat I have included above (with a sweater underneath).

But if it is a January, or February vacation (and even March) then you will want something warmer.

Think windproof, waterproof, and even a hood is nice because when you are walking through downtown the skyscrapers cause wind vortexes and while they are fun in the summer, but in the winter they are bitterly cold and will suck the breath right out of you.

Am I scaring you away yet? 😉

A coat doesn’t have to cost a fortune like the Canada Goose jackets. Anything that has a down or thermal filling will usually be warm enough, and bonus points if it is long enough to cover your butt (believe me, don’t go for the bomber style).

For the last five years, I have had the same winter coat but it is really, really heavy. It feels like when you have the heavy radiation cape over you when you get x-rays at the dentist.

I would like to get another one this year that isn’t so heavy.  While I really really like the style of this one, it’s too expensive for my tastes at the moment and I will probably end up with one like this instead.

That’s if I even cave and buy one. I still might squeeze one more year out of mine.

A couple of things to remember when packing your travel capsule is that you will want to bring tights, leggings, or thermal undergarments if you plan on being outside a lot.

Especially if you are not accustomed to the cold, because they are great for layering under your pants/skirts/dresses. And don’t forget a toque (beanie), scarf, and gloves/mitts.
