When I was three years old my mom noticed that my right eye turned in when I was colouring. She brought me to the ophthalmologist where I was diagnosed with being extremely far-sighted. That’s when I got my first pair of glasses. When I was 6 years old I had to have eye surgery to correct the muscles in my eyes. It was a fairly invasive procedure and I can still remember the details and recovery process to this day.

Between the ages of 3 and 14 I got a new pair of glasses every two years on average as my prescription changed. It was the 1980s and early 90s during that time and the choices for kids eyewear were between bad and worse, so at 14 when my ophthalmologist asked me if I wanted to give contacts a try I said yes. To say I was excited was an understatement. I was just about to enter high school and the thought of starting that journey without having to wear glasses after having them almost my whole life at the point was thrilling. I got the contacts the summer before high school started and I never looked back during those years.

At that time I wore contacts during the day and my glasses at home in the mornings and evenings. This became a habit for me as I went off to college. The combination of my frames getting old and dated, and putting off going to have an eye exam meant that I wore my contacts more often that I should have. In 2004 my high school frames finally broke which forced me to book an eye exam and buy a new pair, so I went to my local glasses retailer and found new glasses. Even in 2004 the selections weren’t as good as today and I ended up buying a pair of frames that I didn’t love just to have a pair which was a huge mistake (and they cost me $650).

Fast forward to the beginning of July where I finally broke down and booked an eye exam. This time I did it online so I wouldn’t back out, and armed with a new prescription the frames hunt began for the first time in 14 years. I don’t like shopping for glasses in stores because I feel like I can’t truly take as much time as I want to decide, and the price is much higher, so online makes a lot more sense for me. Tom and I have bought our contact lenses from Clearly for years now and when they asked me if I was interested in a new pair of glasses I knew this opportunity came at the perfect time.

What I love about Clearly is not only do they give detailed measurements and suggestions for your face shape/size for every frame, but customers also post photos of themselves in the review section so you can see how they look on various face shapes. This is how I ended up with the Derek Cardigan 7021 frames; the photos in the reviews showed the shape and fit that I was looking for and the little grammar accents of the colon and semicolon in the corners won me over. Clearly is also really affordable so now I can get multiple pairs (maybe even in different colours) for less than one pair would cost me in a brick and mortar store. I finally have a pair of frames that I can proudly wear in public for the first time in my entire life. Thank you Clearly!

The best part for me? For every pair of glasses bought, they will donate a pair of glasses to someone in need with their Buy One, Give One mission. That made choosing Clearly a no-brainer.

    • Thanks Ardith! It’s been long overdue. It feels weird to wear them in public again.
