This is something I have wanted to do for a long time. I think a river cruise along the Danube would be amazing. The one that is really high on my bucket list is the Christmas Markets Cruise, which stops at the different Christmas markets in each country along the way. Alas, this list isn’t for me but for a reader who is going on a Danube Cruise in April for 8 days. April isn’t the peak season because the weather hasn’t yet quite transitioned to spring and can be quite cold still, especially since you will be on the water. This is why I have included a lot of sweaters and neutrals for layering.

Although you have the option of watching the water through the floor to ceiling windows to stay warm on most cruises, venturing out on to the deck and shore excursions are definitely going to happen so you will want to be prepared with proper attire (i.e. scarves, gloves, hats, and a jacket). I always have three pairs of footwear in my lists which include the pair you will be wearing for travel. They are usually a flat, some kind of runner/comfortable walking shoe, and a boot. Of course this entirely depends on the season, but for this list you will notice that I included a pair of heels. This is because there is one night on the cruise that she needed a formal dinner look option. If your trip doesn’t require a really dressy shoe than swap it out for something in your taste.

Several of these pieces work double duty, like the black sweater has a removable cowl neck for two sweaters in one, the scarf is reversible, and the clutch is convertible so that you can also attach a strap and it becomes a cross body. These types of pieces are key in getting the versatility you need for packing light. Outfit options for this list will be in the next post.

Happy Hump day, may the next few days speed by 😉

  1. I love this packing list! We went on this trip last year in early June and even then we encountered cool days and rainy weather but it was warm in Budapest! The only thing I would suggest adding is a waterproof rain jacket or coat and perhaps a few more lighter layers. It was a trip of a lifetime:)

  2. We are going on this trip soon. The temps look varied so this is a great list, adding in short sleeve fitness tops for layering (warmer days). Zella, Athleta, etc. Ours has biking and hiking excursions so the fitness tops will come in handy. We will also be on the trip two weeks with the pre stay (Germany) and flying to London for 4 days. Adding in knee boots. Vacation capsule colors black/dark grey.

    • Weather can change so dramatically so it’s definitely a good idea to have enough workable pieces for varying temps. It sounds like it’s going to be a fantastic (an athletic) trip. I hope you have an incredible time!
