Do you need help with ideas of what to pack for Italy and Switzerland vacation? When you are packing for more than one country at a time of year when the temperatures and weather can fluctuate greatly you have to make sure that you cover all bases with your wardrobe. Packing for multiple climates is all about the layering.

I received a packing list request for an Italy and Switzerland travel wardrobe ideas for a trip for 14 days in April. The temperatures for the locations they are going have lows of -8°C (18°F) to highs of 23°C (74°F). The average range is -5°C (23°F) to 18°C (64°F) with high precipitation.

This means that you need to include cold weather clothing, light weather clothing, and everything in between for cooler nights. The solution is layerable items. Items you can build on or remove to accommodate the fluctuating temperatures.

On any given day during April/May for Italy and Switzerland there is a 40-60% chance of rainfall in many of the cities, so waterproof footwear is important. When you have rain combined with cooler temperatures it can get very damp feeling so I included several sweaters that help you to stay warm.

Several of the items I included in this list are reversible so you get two different looks out of one. The coat, purse (comes in a lot of awesome colour combinations), and scarf all reverse to other colours to help add a little variety.

I didn’t want to include anything with a really high heel because I wanted footwear  hat is accessible on any given day. The booties are dressy, but also practical for walking on uneven cobblestone roads.

I also included two dresses for variety, one basic black for dressing up, and one printed long wrap dress for warmer casual days. One of these could easily be omitted to pack lighter.

As usual you would pick several pieces from this list to wear on the plane. Preferably the bulkier, harder to pack items, since airplanes tend towards the cooler side, wearing a sweater and/or coat makes sense. Especially if your destination is cold (or colder than you are accustomed to). As always the outfits options for this post will be in the next post.

How do you pack for destinations that have big temperature variations?
