Prague is a history buff’s dream. From its bridges, churches, towers, and medieval centre it is overflowing with culture, art, music, and fine dining. It had a beautiful castle from the 9th century, cobblestone walkways, walled courtyards, cathedrals, and an abundance of church spires. It is also considered one of the most charming and beautiful cities in Europe. Here is a list of things and in my What to See in Prague list (otherwise known as what I would like to see in Prague):

  1. Prague Castle – Dating from the 9th century it is one of the largest ancient castles in the world. It was the seat to the Kings of Bohemia and the current President rules from there. It is home to a collection of historic buildings, gardens,  museums, and galleries that house some of the great artistic and cultural treasures of the Czech Republic. And don’t forget the Golden Lane.
  2. Old Town  – The center being the Old Town Square, it has been relatively untouched since the 11-12th century. Medieval history at its finest, and a few of the sites to see are the Old Town Hall & Astronomical Clock (check it out at the hour chime), Tyn Church, and St. Nicholas Church.
  3. Charles Bridge – The Charles Bridge was built in 1357 to replace the old (1170) Romanesque Judith Bridge. It is one of the oldest bridges in Central Europe. It was the most important bridge connecting Prague Castle and the city’s Old Town.
  4. Josefov – This was the Jewish Ghetto, when in the 13th century the Jewish people were forced to leave their homes and settle in this one area.
  5. Strahov Monastery – It has been a working monastery since being founded in 1143. It has an art gallery of about 1500 paintings, some sculptures, and handicrafts objects spanning from the 14th – 19th centuries. The major draw to this monastery is the ornate libraries that hold more than 125,000 volumes.
  6. Prague Dancing House – An ultra modern artistic building surrounded by historic architecture. It was originally named “Fred and Ginger Building” after the famous dancing pair. The top floor is the only part open to the public and is home to the Ginger & Fred Restaurant. This building is a piece of modern art within a historic city.
  7. Vysehrad – One of the most important historical places in Prague. It is a fortress on a cliff above the Vltava River. The grounds area is a beautiful park to walk through with the Church of St. Peter and Paul as a center piece.
  8. Petrinska Rozhledna – a 63.5 metre tall look out tower that strongly resembles the Eiffel Tower.
  9. Prague Zoo – Listed as one of the best zoos in the world, the Prague zoo was opened in 1931 with the goal to “advance the study of zoology, protect wildlife, and educate the public.”
  10. Prague Christmas Markets – Open daily at the Old Town Square and Wenceslas Square. Browse all the stalls, listen to Christmas Carols, eat, and drink hot wine. They bring the locals and tourists together in enjoying the Christmas spirit.

I’m fairly certain that I would go to Prague Castle and not want to leave.  I am also totally a museum person. I could visit anywhere and spend the entire time walking through museums and art galleries. There are quite a few museums in Prague and the Czech National Art Gallery is full of amazing art.
