Last week the girls and I went to my parents. We haven’t been there for a while and Tom was working all week so we decided to go up and visit. It was my mom’s birthday too so that was an added bonus as well as incentive. My hometown is a smaller city but it has a lot of other towns (with things to do) in close driving proximity, so I needed a variety of clothes. This gave me the chance to try out my new Mason Travel Satchel from Sole Society. You know, the one that I dropped massive hints to Tom about because I wanted it for my birthday. I wanted to see of I could pack a week worth of clothes in there without too much fuss and I did.

The weather was predicted to be slightly cooler (18-20C or 64-68F) that week and I had to plan for both hot and cooler days (so I busted out a few new fall pieces ahead of time). What I wore there was a pair of jeans, black tank, pullover, boots, and a hat.  I over-packed a bit because I knew I was only going to my moms so I didn’t have to worry about having too much. And I wasn’t 100% sure of when we were coming back so I threw a few extras in. I ended up not wearing the sandals at all though, because of rain and cooler temperatures. The items in this list could have easily taken me to 10+ days without wearing the same thing twice. This packing list is going to look a lot like my fall wardrobe “capsule” that I am going to post this weekend because the clothes on this list came directly out of my closet, so sorry if there is a lot of repetition. It shows you how many looks I can make with my wardrobe though, and helps me to keep track of outfit ideas. The outfit ideas for this list are located in this post.

What I packed:

  • one pair of jeans
  • one pair of black pants
  • Dark grey pullover
  • white t-shirt
  • black t-shirt
  • Ramones oversized shirt
  • Blouse
  • kimono jacket
  • blazer
  • slip-on shoes
  • sandals
  • 5 pairs of underwear
  • 2 bras
  • 4 socks
  • 3 pairs of leggings (for bed and exercise)
  • 2 bedtime/exercise tanks
  • wool hat
  • and a bikini just in case it got hot (my parents live by a beach)

Everything fit in really well without too much sorting and refolding. I used the rolling trick for clothes and stuffed items in my shoes to take less room, the sweater rolled in to the hat helped it keep its shape. I kept my toiletries in my purse and any accessories went in the carry-on too. I am confident that I could have packed for a holiday away with this bag if I planned outfits well and didn’t over-pack. This was nice to find out. The kids were able to pack each of their weeks worth of clothes in a backpack, with an extra backpack for entertainment items like books and iPads. Roo slightly over-packed because she thinks she needs 50 t-shirts but overall they did well. I think I would like to get them a Mason bag too that they can share. When I asked her what colour she would want she said, “Tardis Blue!” Apparently everything needs to be associated with Doctor Who or Harry Potter.

I knew we succeeded in packing light when Tom was walking us down to the car and he stopped, looked us over and said, “That’s all you’re bringing? I doesn’t look like enough for a week.” Success.

*not my exact necklace, but similar. I found my happy necklace in a thrift store.
** Similar hat. Mine was sold out.
*** These boots are very similar to the ones I have. My boots I have now I bought at Aldo’s in 2012 after Tom puked on my then favourite pair. Long story for a later time ;)
