I’m going to let you in on a little secret. I’ve never had a manicure or pedicure in my life. Not even when I got married. If you find that shocking then this will really surprise you. I haven’t been to a hairdresser since 1999. What started off as some bad hair salon experiences, moved to damaged hair shame, and finally to the recent years of “too broke to even think about it”. So I have become a professional bottled blonde, who cuts her own hair, and paints her own nails. And by cutting my hair I mean taking sections and randomly trimming/cutting them with hopes it all blends well and turns out okay. I have absolutely no hair cutting experience but it seems to have worked out so far. Well, kind of.
There was also a time in my life that the current state of my nails would have bothered me. The first moment they chipped I would have pulled out my nail polish kit and quickly reapplied. My expectations of myself have lowered over the years. When you spend your day cleaning up after kids and wiping asses you begin to accept that your nail polish will chip within 24 hours of application. The fact that you actually painted your nails should be celebrated as an achievement, so finding the time to remove and reapply slides way down on your importance roster. I really would like to get pampered at some point in my life. But I know when it came down to going I would rather spend that money on my kids in some form. I might invest in Jamberry nails though. I have some friends who are consultants and they seem like they would solve the “perpetual in need of a manicure” look that I have sported a lot lately.
I was going to have a nice long bath tonight and as I was gathering my stuff to go in, my 4-year-old came out of her room with her new Darth Vader mask and started singing Let it Go. See, if I would have gone into that bath I would have missed this. Pampering is over-rated ;)
